Message

A friend of mine was once challenged by a group of college students to prove to them that the Bible is the Word of God. He responded by saying that while he could not give them empirical proof, he could prove it just as you would prove a bottle of iodine is a bottle of iodine.

When the students persisted he asked one of them to get a bottle of iodine from the hall bathroom. What do you have?, asked my friend. A bottle of iodine was the response. How do you know? He was asked. Look, I can read said the student it says Iodine on the label. You’re sure? Asked my friend. Of course, I am, said the student. That’s strange, said my friend, you read the label and you’re sure its iodine, yet this book has a label that says, Holy Bible, Word of God and you doubt that. Well, a lot of books claim to be from God so just because it says that. . . But said my friend, a lot of bottles could claim to be iodine. I’m just interested that you are so sure about one and doubt the other.

But, said my friend, let’s suppose we aren’t sure that there is iodine in that bottle, how could we be sure? We could open it and see if it looks like iodine, we could smell it and see if it smells like iodine, we could put it on a cut and see if it smarts like iodine, and if the cut heals, we can know it heals like iodine. OK said the students but what does that

The Bible claims to transform lives, and I can take you to prisons and rescue missions and mission fields all over the world and introduce you to men and women who were completely changed by the Bible. If it works like iodine, its most likely iodine, and if it makes men and women new – it is most likely all it claims to be.

There is a final proof, but I must wait for another time to share that.

In the meantime, let me ask you, what do you think of the bible and how much research has you put into your answer?

Message

The late Chuck Colson, founder of Prison Fellowship would have loved to see the Museum of the Bible opening this Friday in Washington DC. Of course, Chuck is seeing something far better now, the glory of which the Bible he loved speaks. But Chuck was unequivocal on Scripture and he once wrote,

“The Bible – banned, burned, and beloved. More widely read, more frequently attacked than any other book in history. Generations of intellectuals have attempted to discredit it; dictators of every age have outlawed it and executed those who read it. Yet . . .Fragments of it smuggled into solitary prison cells have transformed ruthless killers into gentle saints.”

Amazing isn’t it? This Book, so maligned and so hated, does exactly what it says it can do. It makes new creatures our of old sinners – it did that for me – have you allowed it to do that for you?

Message

In this age of technology we are used to getting printed material at the push of a button, but it was not always so. For centuries the world relied on Scribes to do the tenuous task of copying documents one letter at a time.

So, imagine a machine that for the first time could print as many copies of a document as the printer wanted, and do it accurately and with ease. That is exactly what the Gutenberg Printing Press brought to medieval Europe just at a time when Luther was translating the Bible into German and Wycliffe and Tyndale where doing the same in English.

The Providential timing of it all was so perfect that it doesn’t surprise me that the new Bible Museum in Washington will have an exact replica of the Gutenberg Printing Press, the first press to use moveable type, capable of printing hundreds of copies of the Bible just at the time it was most needed.

Funny thing about God, He is always right on time. And he has a time for you. He says, Now is the accepted time, Today is the day of salvation. So right now, place your eternal destiny in His loving hands and believe His promise, whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved.

In just a few weeks now the Museum of the Bible will open in Washington DC. – the actual target date, Friday, November 17. The Museum is the brain-child of Hobby Lobby president, Steve Green, who has spent a lifetime collecting over 40,000 rare biblical manuscripts and ancient artifacts, and is a cooperative effort that will bring exhibits from around the world.

According to one article, the building is one of the 5 largest Museums in DC, boasting 430,000 square foot of floor space, on which it displays over 2 million artifacts and the latest in inter-active media exhibits along with live theatre. The man behind actually putting it all together is Cary Summers, best known for his work on the Ark Encounter in Williamston, KY. Having walked through the Ark, I can only imagine the degree of quality research that will go into every one of the displays.

One thing is certain, the Museum of the Bible will lay out before a skeptical and unbelieving world the evidence of the absolute accuracy and reliability of the Word of God. Time was when doubters could hide behind missing pieces of the story and question the truth of the text – but that time has passed. The evidence for the Bible is so great, that the only stubborn refusal can reject its message.

In the film, My Fair Lady, Professor Henry Higgins, once told Eliza Doolittle “the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain.” Personally, I can’t vouch for the accuracy of that meteorological tidbit.

I have, however, recently discovered that the rain on a certain mountain in Montana tends to wander in three different directions. Raindrops that form in the exact same cloud can end up as part of the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, or Hudson Bay, depending on which part of the mountain they fall.

The mountain is called Triple Divide Peak and you’ll find it in Glacier National Park. The Continental Divide and the Laurentian Divide meet at the peak of this 8,020 foot mountain. This curious situation means that the slightest movement of the cloud, or rush of the wind may send a raindrop in a completely different and opposite direction.

Well, those raindrops have no control over their destiny – but you do. You can decide to trust Christ and spend eternity with Him, or reject Him, and flow along with the crowd into the pit of hell. But every life comes to a Continental Divide and has to flow one way or the other. Make the right choice today.

Message

What are you spending your life for? If indeed we are eternal, then that question takes on extreme importance.

The goal set by educators and most of the world is that of “self-realization”. Finding out what pleases me, what I’m good at, what brings me the most satisfaction and then go for it. And much of the world operates on that principle. Maybe thoughtful people should ask, How’s that working for you?

I remember years ago reading a news magazine in which a saw a picture of a very palatial and beautiful home, totally engulfed in flames. In the foreground, an older woman is seen collapsing into the arms of two firemen, and the caption reads, “Oh, my God, everything we ever gave our lives for is gone.”

That picture made a profound impression on me – I can see it today as plainly as I could all those years ago. I remember just sitting and staring at it and then I remember crying out to God, “Oh God, forbid that I should spend my life, for something fire can destroy in a moment.”

The old poem says, “Only one life, twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.” I’ve made that motto my goal, and the closer I get to the finish line the more I thank God that I have. So – what are you spending your life for?

Message

I remember some years ago, the first time I watched a competitive game among youngsters, and when the game ended every kid got a trophy – winners and losers. I learned they were called, Participation Trophies, you get one just for being there. Something within me whispered, there is something wrong here, we’re teaching a lesson we don’t want to teach.

Sure enough, one of the characteristics ascribed to the Millennial generation seems to be that they feel entitled to rewards whether they have earned them or not. That’s what happens when you grow up on Participation Trophies.

Well, God has a reward system as well. I’m not talking about salvation . . . salvation is a gift purchased by Christ and received by a simple act of faith. I’m talking about those rewards for faithful service which have been promised believers who serve Christ. Jesus told numerous parables about the time, when faithful service will be rewarded and unfaithfulness judged.

The Apostle Paul made this truth one of the motivating factors of his life. He wrote, You know that many runners enter a race, and only one of them wins the prize. So run to win! (1 Corinthians 9:24 CEV).

No – Participation Trophies have no place in this race. Serving God faithfully, running the race lawfully, and staying the course to the end, will bring the crown of glory – and falling short of that there are no rewards. Just think of that.

Message

October is Missions Month for me, I will be speaking at Churches over a tri-state region and at several, the topic is missions. Well, Missions was never a peripheral issue for Christ or for the early church. The Great Commission is actually found in all four Gospels and again in the book of Acts.

Matthew gives us the Method of missions: “Go ye therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” No ambiguity there.

Mark emphasizes the Scope of the great Commission, “Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”

Luke gives us the content or the message of Missions, “thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”

In John we find our authority for Missions, “As my Father hath sent me into the world even so send I you.”

But none of that could avail without the power of Missions as promised in Acts, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
No ambiguity in any of that – the challenge is simply to accept and obey it. No wonder Missions has been called, the Whole Task, for the Whole Church For the Whole Age.

Message

Been doing any kneeling this week? Gotten yourself in a position of humility toward God? When is the last time you actually got on your knees before Almighty God when you prayed. Getting on your knees shows to God, angels and men an attitude of humility and total submission to God.

One of the most successful prayers in the Bible was the prophet Daniel. You will remember how he prayed even after they had passed a law that prayer to any god but the king would be punishable by death. Listen to what Daniel did, Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime (Daniel 6:10).

Daniel was determined that both God and man would know his total submission to God by seeing him on his knees, and God blessed him for it. He saved him out of the mouths of lions and Daniel became the chief ruler under the king.

So, Do God, angels and men know that you are serious about your prayers? How often have they seen you on your knees lately?

Message

If humility is the key to answered prayer, and the Scripture commands that we “humble ourselves”, How does that work? How do we do that?

There are a score of instances in Scripture where people have taken the place of humility, and most of them involve anything from fasting to sackcloth and ashes, and prostrating themselves before God.

Let’s just take a look at that last one – the posture or position we take in prayer. Doesn’t matter does it? Well, maybe it does.

Remember that real prayer involves conflict – that’s right, we are in a battle and this is spiritual warfare. That means, among other things, that when I pray I have an audience of God, and I also have an audience of angels, both holy and fallen. This becomes evident in passages like Zechariah 3, where Joshua the high priest is seen standing before God and Satan is seen resisting him.

If it’s true that angels get involved when we pray, God knows my heart but they don’t. So how are they to know my total dependence on God and my humility as I come to God. They only way they can know is by the position of my body. That’s why for years, I determined that at least once every day, God, angels and demons would see me on my knees before God. I want them to know, Jesus is my LORD and I willingly humble myself before Him. Think about it
