Message

What are you spending your life for? If indeed we are eternal, then that question takes on extreme importance.

The goal set by educators and most of the world is that of “self-realization”. Finding out what pleases me, what I’m good at, what brings me the most satisfaction and then go for it. And much of the world operates on that principle. Maybe thoughtful people should ask, How’s that working for you?

I remember years ago reading a news magazine in which a saw a picture of a very palatial and beautiful home, totally engulfed in flames. In the foreground, an older woman is seen collapsing into the arms of two firemen, and the caption reads, “Oh, my God, everything we ever gave our lives for is gone.”

That picture made a profound impression on me – I can see it today as plainly as I could all those years ago. I remember just sitting and staring at it and then I remember crying out to God, “Oh God, forbid that I should spend my life, for something fire can destroy in a moment.”

The old poem says, “Only one life, twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.” I’ve made that motto my goal, and the closer I get to the finish line the more I thank God that I have. So – what are you spending your life for?

Message

I remember some years ago, the first time I watched a competitive game among youngsters, and when the game ended every kid got a trophy – winners and losers. I learned they were called, Participation Trophies, you get one just for being there. Something within me whispered, there is something wrong here, we’re teaching a lesson we don’t want to teach.

Sure enough, one of the characteristics ascribed to the Millennial generation seems to be that they feel entitled to rewards whether they have earned them or not. That’s what happens when you grow up on Participation Trophies.

Well, God has a reward system as well. I’m not talking about salvation . . . salvation is a gift purchased by Christ and received by a simple act of faith. I’m talking about those rewards for faithful service which have been promised believers who serve Christ. Jesus told numerous parables about the time, when faithful service will be rewarded and unfaithfulness judged.

The Apostle Paul made this truth one of the motivating factors of his life. He wrote, You know that many runners enter a race, and only one of them wins the prize. So run to win! (1 Corinthians 9:24 CEV).

No – Participation Trophies have no place in this race. Serving God faithfully, running the race lawfully, and staying the course to the end, will bring the crown of glory – and falling short of that there are no rewards. Just think of that.

Message

October is Missions Month for me, I will be speaking at Churches over a tri-state region and at several, the topic is missions. Well, Missions was never a peripheral issue for Christ or for the early church. The Great Commission is actually found in all four Gospels and again in the book of Acts.

Matthew gives us the Method of missions: “Go ye therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” No ambiguity there.

Mark emphasizes the Scope of the great Commission, “Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”

Luke gives us the content or the message of Missions, “thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”

In John we find our authority for Missions, “As my Father hath sent me into the world even so send I you.”

But none of that could avail without the power of Missions as promised in Acts, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
No ambiguity in any of that – the challenge is simply to accept and obey it. No wonder Missions has been called, the Whole Task, for the Whole Church For the Whole Age.

Message

Been doing any kneeling this week? Gotten yourself in a position of humility toward God? When is the last time you actually got on your knees before Almighty God when you prayed. Getting on your knees shows to God, angels and men an attitude of humility and total submission to God.

One of the most successful prayers in the Bible was the prophet Daniel. You will remember how he prayed even after they had passed a law that prayer to any god but the king would be punishable by death. Listen to what Daniel did, Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime (Daniel 6:10).

Daniel was determined that both God and man would know his total submission to God by seeing him on his knees, and God blessed him for it. He saved him out of the mouths of lions and Daniel became the chief ruler under the king.

So, Do God, angels and men know that you are serious about your prayers? How often have they seen you on your knees lately?

Message

If humility is the key to answered prayer, and the Scripture commands that we “humble ourselves”, How does that work? How do we do that?

There are a score of instances in Scripture where people have taken the place of humility, and most of them involve anything from fasting to sackcloth and ashes, and prostrating themselves before God.

Let’s just take a look at that last one – the posture or position we take in prayer. Doesn’t matter does it? Well, maybe it does.

Remember that real prayer involves conflict – that’s right, we are in a battle and this is spiritual warfare. That means, among other things, that when I pray I have an audience of God, and I also have an audience of angels, both holy and fallen. This becomes evident in passages like Zechariah 3, where Joshua the high priest is seen standing before God and Satan is seen resisting him.

If it’s true that angels get involved when we pray, God knows my heart but they don’t. So how are they to know my total dependence on God and my humility as I come to God. They only way they can know is by the position of my body. That’s why for years, I determined that at least once every day, God, angels and demons would see me on my knees before God. I want them to know, Jesus is my LORD and I willingly humble myself before Him. Think about it

Message

Last time we were together we learned from a series of Gospel stories that only people who have faith mixed with desperation get the answers they are seeking to their prayers.

There was another characteristic that was true of all these people who get answers to prayer, and that is the characteristic of humility.  James states it like this when he says; God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.  Actually the word translated resists means to oppose.  Do you see the picture… we come to God and because he senses there is a spirit of pride in us we meet resistance rather than acceptance…

I wonder if that’s the reason we have so little victory in prayer.  Or is it because we fail to obey another verse in James (James 4:10) Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord.  Peter puts it like this; Humble yourselves therefore under the might hand of God.  But in both cases notice that there is an imperative here.  This is an action that we are supposed to take, Humble yourselves,,,

Well next time we are together we are going to look at this again.  But for now let’s just remember that desperate people who humble themselves get answers to prayer.  So let’s come to God like that.

Message

Last week I referred to Count Ludwig von Zinzendorf’s beautiful hymn – Jesus, Thy blood and righteousness, in which he clearly declares salvation through faith alone in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Through that final and sufficient sacrifice, those who believe are declared righteous, with the perfect righteousness of God.

Well, that was not the only truth Zinzenforf addressed in that hymn. He also wrote; Lord, I believe were sinners more, Than sands upon the ocean shore, Thou hast for all a ransom paid, For all a full atonement made. And in those words he affirmed the truth that Christ’s atonement was not only efficacious for all who believe, but was universal and available for any who would embrace it.

Zinzendorf was right. The Apostle said it like this, Christ is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2). Language could hardly be clearer – you can argue with it, try to twist it to fit your theological bias, or you can believe it and proclaim it to a whole world that desperately needs to hear that their sins can all be forgiven when they believe the testimony of God. Hear it again, Christ is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. Believe it and you will be born again.

Message

It was just 500 years ago that Martin Luther nailed his 95 thesis to the door of the church in Wittenburg, triggering the Protestant Reformation.  The central point of debate was the doctrine of justification by faith alone in Christ alone as the sufficient means of salvation.  That central truth of the gospel is still in debate despite a recent book proclaiming the Reformation is over.

Well its not over because Vatican II affirmed the findings of the infamous Council of Trent, which Rome called to counter the Reformation.  Which reads in Canon 9; “If anyone sayeth that by faith alone the impious is justified in such wise as to mean that nothing else is required in order to obtain the grace of justification, let him be an anthema.”.  Well Rome wrote that in spite of the words of the Apostle Paul which read; Being justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Romans 5:1

No the Reformation will never be over for the battle for truth is as real today as it was in Luther’s time.

Message

A recent Life Way Research Survey found that among Americans 35 years of age and younger, less than 40 percent believe that “right and wrong are fixed principles that do not change”. That means, morality is relative – or worse, maybe it’s just not relevant at all.

That same article suggested, “We need to get back to the basics, and If we ever want to make America great again, we need to rediscover what made America great in the first place.” The writer then goes on to observe that, “this nation was founded by strong Christian men and women that believed very firmly in the truths laid out in the Bible.”

I agree, but I would also observe that secular education in our publicly funded schools has so separated this generation from the Bible that it no longer has any idea what the Bible teaches and even has seriously questioned whether whatever it teaches is relevant to anybody.

In a nation where the Bible is readily available everywhere and most families have multiple copies, it is fast becoming one of the most neglected and abandoned books of all time. I hope it will not be abandoned by you.
