Message – Words are amazing things. Last week we talked about the word, Nevertheless. Israel used it when, after describing the beauty and richness of the land of Canaan, they said, Nevertheless – and Nevertheless spelled their doom. If only they had believed God.

But that Nevertheless, so completely altered Israel’s history that the Holy Spirit refers to it again in Psalm 95:7-11 To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work. Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways: Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.

The alternative to nevertheless, was Today! Yes, Today, hear His voice. Today follow Him. Today cast your whole future upon Him and do it Today. As surely as Israel’s Nevertheless spelled their doom and defeat – Today spells victory and blessing. Make it Today.

Message – In Numbers 13, we find the young nation Israel on the very verge of success and victory. Who would have ever guessed that a nation of slaves could have escaped their bondage and made a successful march across a desert wilderness and now they stand on the boarder of the Land God promised them. With great anticipation they sent out the spies and now they return with a cluster of grapes so large it took two men to carry it. Listen to their report:

We came into the land where you sent us, and surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it…. ( The land was all God had promised it would be – no one could have asked for more.) But now listen to their conclusion:

Nevertheless, the people are strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of the Giant (Anak) there. (Numbers 13:27, 28)

Amazing – sobering, how one little word can change everything. That one word doomed Israel to 40 years of daily funerals in the wilderness till that generation died. Nevertheless, looks at circumstances. It counts is own resources, and when you do that, you have stopped believing and trusting God.

Message – Hebrews 11:8 reads, By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

Think of that – Knowing nothing, Abraham believed everything – everything God had said, and by forsaking all he gained everything God had promised. The challenge is simple – will you believe God? Real faith always acts on the conviction that all God says is true, that he cannot lie, and that we can depend on anything He tells us in His Word . By the way, He says that, “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the LORD, (Jesus) will be saved.” Have you believed that? Real faith always acts on the conviction that God is true.

Message – The word “vanity” appears over 30 times in the book of Ecclesiastes. In fact it is most often written, vanity of vanities. In the original it is two words, (hebel hăbêl) and the meaning is that which is worthless, unsatisfying, and temporary. Solomon, who wrote Ecclesiastes, pursed the avenues of riches, possessions, philosophy and every conceivable pleasure, only to conclude that it was all vanity; worthless, unsatisfying, and temporary. His conclusion is confirmed by the New Testament in 1 John 2:15 – 17 where we read, Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. Want something lasting, satisfying and eternal?

Message – Well Christmas is over and a New Year lies before us. But before the sounds of Christmas fade once again from our ears, I want to ask one last time, the question we have been asking all during this season, Who is Jesus Christ?

That is the question of the ages and the one questions that determines your destiny and mine. If Jesus Christ is not who He and millions of his followers have claimed He is, God incarnate in the flesh, then there is no hope of sins forgiven and eternal life in heaven. But if He is, and if you will place your hope and your trust in Him alone, then we have His promise, “I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish.

Thomas, one of Jesus own disciples agonized over that question until he saw the risen Christ with the nail prints of His crucifixion still in His hands. Listen to His testimony as we close this year, “Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.”

Jesus has a word for Thomas, He said, “Thomas, because thou hast seen me, you have believed: blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed.”

Thomas got it right – perhaps Jesus is waiting for those words from your lips, “My Lord and my God.”

Message – Well, Christmas is upon us and we once again will celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ.  But we have been asking the central question of Christmas, and of history itself, Who is Jesus Christ?  We have listened as Matthew and Luke (Luke telling Mary’s story) gave their answer.  Matthew said He is God with us.  The angel told Mary, “That Holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called The Son of God.”  Today we want to listen to John’s testimony, but even before we do I want to ask that same haunting question, to you – who do you say Jesus Christ is?  Your answer will not effect history – Jesus Christ is who He is – but your answer will effect you destiny.  Listen to the testimony of the man who was the closest to Jesus of all his disciples, the Apostle John.  He writes, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

As you celebrate His birthday, contemplate who He is, and His love in coming to this earth to offer himself a ransom for your sin and mine – and worship.

Message – At this Christmas season I thought it would be well to once again ask the central question raised by a holiday popular with Christians and pagans alike, Who is this baby whose birthday we celebrate? Who is Jesus Christ?

Last week we heard Matthew’s answer – this week let’s listen as His mother herself answers the question as related to Dr. Luke. He writes: And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

That is the answer of Jesus mother and she ought to know – but it still leaves us with this question, What is your answer? Who is Jesus Christ?

Message – One of the advantages of celebrating Christmas is that it gets people thinking and even the thoughtful pagan will ponder the question, “So Who is Jesus Christ?” Of course the only final answer is found in the testimony of the Scriptures and given by those who lived with him during his years of ministry. Matthew tells it like this, Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened like this; His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph and before they came together, she was found to be with child. But Joseph, her husband, being just, and not willing to make her a public example, purposed to put her away secretly. And as he thought upon these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take to you Mary as your wife. For that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she shall bear a son, and you shall call His name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins.

Now all this happened so that might be fulfilled that which was spoken of the LORD by the prophet, saying, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive in her womb, and will bear a son. And they will call His name Emmanuel,” which being interpreted is, God with us. That is the testimony of Matthew – so how would you answer the question, “Who is Jesus Christ?”

Message – Have you ever noticed that the importance we place on a message, has a direct relation to the importance of the messenger? Suppose you are driving along on a blissful day and your wife notices that you are exceeding the speed limit, and suppose she softly reminds you. Are you likely to change your behavior, or ignore the warning? Maybe she, or one of the children remind you again . . . same reaction? And then suppose you suddenly hear the unmarked car behind you turn on its siren and flash a blue light from the grill. Now my question – will that change your behavior? So what was the difference – it was the same message – but oh, you say, it was the difference in the importance of the messenger.

The book of Hebrews begins with these words, “In the past God spoke to our ancestors many times and in many ways through the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us through his Son.” The point the writer is about to make is this – if what the prophets said was important, how much more important is it when the message comes through God’s own Son? The message is the same, but the importance of the Messenger should be enough to cause us to change our behavior.

Message – Ephesians 3:16-19 reads like this; That he (God) would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Rooted and grounded in love – The only way for the tender plant of the new life in Christ to grow, is to have its roots sunk deeply into the warm soil of God’s love. As we believe His love, we receive His love, and can draw upon His love and we become healthy fruitful plants – showing forth the love of God. Drawing on the nourishment of the Love of God, results in being filled with all the fullness of God.
