Message – 1 Peter 4:17 – 19
For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? What Peter is telling us is that when God begins to judge a nation or a city He always begins with His own. That may not be a comforting thought, but it is a necessary one. When God begins to judge He begins by purifying His people before He pours out His wrath on His enemies. One translation reads like this; God has already begun judging his own people. And if his judgment begins with us, imagine how terrible it will be for those who refuse to obey his message. We must remember says Peter, that while we may have to suffer for a while, our persecutors will suffer for eternity. So God’s instruction is simple, Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God continue to do what is right while they commit the keeping of their souls to him who is a faithful Creator.

Message – 1 Peter 4:12, 13
Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: We in the west, I am afraid, think suffering for Christ’s sake is indeed a strange thing – but for much of the Church it is an every moment occurrence. And we are told we should rejoice, inasmuch as we are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, we may be glad also with exceeding joy. In Philippians, Paul calls suffering “a gift” – for most of us it’s probably the one we would rather leave under the tree. But this verse tells us, that to do so, to try by all means to avoid suffering is shortsighted. Listen again to the promise that goes with the suffering, that, when Christ’s glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. Glad for what? Glad we suffered for those who are partakers of the suffering, will be partakers of the glory.

Message – 1 Peter 4:3 – 5
Last time we saw that because Christ died in our place we are to reckon it true that His death was our death and we are now dead to the world and all its allurements and alive to God. Today I want us to see the change that Peter tells us that will make in our lives:
Vs. 3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: Anything sound familiar here? One translation says it like this; You have spent enough time in the past doing what the heathen like to do. Your lives were spent in indecency, lust, drunkenness, sexual orgies, drinking parties, and the disgusting worship of idols. What a list. Perhaps you were spared from all of that, but some us, I’m afraid find it very descriptive of they way we lived. But no more. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation, Old things have past away and all things have become new. And how does the old gang react to that? Vs. 4 They think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: Yes says Peter, they may speak evil of you, but they will give account to God that is ready to judge the living and the dead. There is a judgment and those who reject the Savior will not escape it. The world of indecency, lust, drunkenness, and sexual orgies, may fancy they are going to heaven, but the Scriptures say they are not. May we who are, live like it.

Message – 1 Peter 4:1, 2
Peter opens the 4th chapter with a rather strange statement that requires a bit of thought and understanding. He says, Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us (that is, in our place, as our personal substitute), in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. so what does Peter mean? I’ve always found Paul a bit easier to understand and Paul says the same thing in Romans 6:6, 7 like this, Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Christ, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. The argument is this, If Christ died the death I deserved as my personal substitute, then from a legal perspective I died, that is, his death is reckoned as mine. Now that death frees us from servitude to sin. I have no further obligation to my old master the corrupt desires of my flesh. Now both Paul and Peter tell us, we are to rest upon that truth, live as those who are dead to this world’s temptations and as those who alive to Christ. Grasping that truth and acting in accordance is the way to victory in the Christian life.

Message – 1 Peter 2:2

As Peter commences encouraging those who are going through persecution and suffering because of their faith, that is, simply because they are Christians, he says in chapter 2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: When persecution and suffering come, the only thing that can sustain us is a deep knowledge of God’s Word. That is why the World Wide Bible Institute program was initiated. It is a sound Bible curriculum that was put together by some of the best known and highly respected Bible teachers of our generation. WWBI can not only give you a college-level education leading to a college degree, but it can prepare you to go through the persecution and testing that are certainly coming upon the church. Peter says you ought to desire the sincere milk of the word. If you are one who desires it, I hope I will hear from you.

Message – 1 Peter 1:6,7

Peter continues on the subject of suffering. The suffering he addresses is not the common suffering each of us faces because we are human – not the suffering of sickness or the aches and pains of growing old. Peter is addressing believers who are being persecuted specifically for their faith – because they are followers of Jesus Christ. He characterizes them in two ways in verse 6. First he says they are, greatly rejoicing – the word implies an exultant joy, literally it means to jump for joy. They haven’t won the Publisher’s Sweepstake or the Lottery either. In fact, the next thing he says of them is that they are in manifold temptations: the word is pi-ras-mos’ meaning a testing. And what is being tested? Their very faith is being tested, can they, will they hold on during such a time of trouble in which their very lives are in jeopardy? Well, in verse 7 Peter says that as they do they will come forth as gold, bringing honor to themselves and glory to God at the appearing (the coming) of Jesus Christ. Are you, am I prepared for that kind of suffering?

Message – 1 Peter 1:5

In our last visit we looked at the promise found in 1 Peter of the inheritance that is awaiting the children of God. What we observed was that God gave four certainties, or assurances that it will be secure and awaiting our arrival in glory. Today I want to look at the next part of that statement, which assures us that not only is our inheritance secure, but we who have placed our faith in Jesus Christ are also secure. Peter continues by saying, that it is, reserved in heaven for you who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (that’s 1Peter 1:5).

Our inheritance is secured to us, but we in turn are secured for it – we are “kept” by the power of God. That word is a military term, used to refer to a garrison set to guard a city and keep it safe. What greater hope could be given to those undergoing persecution than the knowledge that God’s power guards them from within, to preserve them for an inheritance of salvation that will be completely revealed to them when they arrive in God’s presence. Are you preserved and kept by God? If you have trusted His Son as your Savior, you are! If not – trust Him right now.

Message – 1 Peter 1:4
I’m just at the age that I am finding more and more of my friends slipping away into eternity. Eternity is an awesome thought. You can spend a lifetime wrestling with the idea, but you will never comprehend it. But to the child of God, it is not only awesome, but glorious. The Apostle Peter says that what awaits us is, an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you.

There are four certainties in this verse. First, that which awaits us is incorruptible (not subject to change and decay), it is undefiled (it will not be ruined by anything unclean or loathsome). Next, it is undiminished, unlike your earthy treasure this one will never be reduced, and finally, it is reserved (literally guarded) until the day you arrive to enjoy it. So maybe getting closer to all that is not so bad after all – How about you? Only God’s children inherit His eternal riches. Remember, as many as receive Him (Jesus) He gives the power (exousia) to become the sons of God. Have you done that? Have you received Him?

Message – In the next several weeks, I want to direct our attention to the epistles of Peter. Peter wrote toward the end of his life and as he faced certain death he had two concerns for the Churches. In his first epistle he speaks to believers undergoing persecution and encourages them by setting their eyes on the glories of their eternal reward. In the second epistle his concern is false doctrine which had led, as it always does, led to immorality right within the church itself. For them, Peter spells out a clear warning.

These 2 epistles sum up in large measure the situation being faced by the church today. Christians in many places are suffering as never before, many even unto death. On the other hand the remainder of the church is experiencing a bombardment of corrupt teaching and immoral living that is unprecedented. Peter’s 2 epistles were written for us.

As we walk through these books together, I want to give you a personal invitation to visit us at WWBIonline.org. There is not a better way to prepare yourself for the challenges which the days ahead will most certainly bring than to become a student of the Word of God.

Message – Last week we talked about Israel’s failure at Kadesh-Barnea where after seeing the good land God had promised and tasting its fruit, Israel looked at the walled cities and the fearsome giants and said, Nevertheless, we can’t take the land God promised. In fact, their doubt lead to fear and their fear lead to rebellion and they talked of stoning Moses and returning to the slavery of Egypt.

Hundreds of years later God reminded them in Psalm 95 and challenged those of that time to believe Him Today. But the warning of failing to believe God Today, is sounded yet again in the New Testament book of Hebrews where we read a quotation from Psalm 95 and then a long commentary ending with these words, “So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.” What God is saying is that when it comes to believing Him, it is often TODAY or never. I hope if you are hearing these words you will make it Today.
