Message

There is a rather ominous phrase found in Luke chapter 13 that seems extremely timely this week, which has been designated a week of national repentance. It comes from the lips of our Lord Jesus Christ himself and it is repeated twice in three verses. As every Bible Scholar knows a prophetic warning repeated twice in scripture signifies absolute certainty a thing is to come to pass. The phrase is this; Jesus said “I am telling you that except you repent you shall all likewise perish”

Somber words indeed – and in the context Jesus was answering the question; Why certain tragedies and disasters had recently occurred? He said they were simply God’s voice calling His people to repentance. I hardly have to remind anyone that we’ve been battered by endless disasters recently, everything from the total collapse of morality, to attacks by terrorists, fires, drought extreme weather – all of which God intends to use to get our attention

National sin always brings national disaster. And the only remedy is national repentance and a turning back to God. So the most crucial election we’ve ever faced is only a week away. We desperately need to heed God’s warning and turn from personal and national sin and cry out for a return of God’s favor

Message

We’ve been taking some words of encouragement from Paul’s epistle to Timothy. I want to know, Have you been listening?

He has been talking about what we are to keep (that is the Truth of the Gospel committed to us), and what God keeps (that is our eternal destiny commited by faith to Him.

Somewhere in God’s record your name will appear. If you have committed your eternal destiny into His hands, He will keep it secure until the day of redemption.

But there is more than just escaping hell and going to heaven. Will your name have after it, “One who walked the pathway of suffering and service, One who was valiant for the Truth, and One who went out of the way to minister to the saints?

Or will it say, One who forsook his friend and turned away from the Truth either in word or deed or both.

Paul writes so that we can “Find Courage for the Conflict” and endure till we receive our reward.

Maybe you are battling with a decision right now? What is God saying from these words of the Apostle Paul written 2000 years ago to the decision you have to make today?

Message

Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us. 2 Timothy 1:13, 14.

In these brief lines we have, The Truth Defined, The Truth Described, the Truth Defended and the Truth Deployed.

Paul defines the truth as “the form of sound words which you have heard from me.” In so doing he declares once again the absolute inspiration of the inscripturated Word of God.

Then he describes the Truth like this, “it is IN Christ Jesus.” In other words, He is the Truth incarnate. He alone could say, I am the Way the Truith and the Life, no man cometh to the father but by me. In Jesus Christ TRUTH became visible.

Then Paul exhorts his reader to Defend the Truth. Paul says, “Hold fast the form of sound words“. Defend it. Keep it, Set a guard over it. Take possession of it. Make the truth your personal possession.

And finally, there is the Truth Deployed. When Paul say we should “KEEP the Truth”, he doesn’t mean we should keep it to ourselves. In just a few verses Paul will write, the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
The goal of WWBI is to provide training so that the Truth is Defined and Described, Defended and Deployed.

Message

I want to go just one more time back to that verse in 2 Tim 1: 12. for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

We have seen that it was not what Paul believed, but who he believed that made the difference in his ability to be confident even when circumstances seemed to belie his security. But we would do an injustice to the text if we failed to note that this assurance of Paul was a forever assurance. He says, I am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

Paul was certain that Christ, the heavenly banker, would keep his investment safe until it was redeemed. And what was that investment? Paul eternal soul. Paul had committed his soul, his eternal destiny to Christ and he was certain that his deposit was safe. I understand that because I too have committed my eternal soul into his care and keeping. What about you? I am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

Message

Last time we looked at that great affirmation found in 2 Timothy 1:12, for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

I observed last time that it was not what Paul believed, but WHO he believed that gave him that confidence. D. L. Moody was once approached by a man who said, “I would like to be a Christian, but I just can’t believe all those things the Bible says.” When he had said that to others, they had responded, “Oh, tell me what you can’t believe, perhaps I can help you.” Moody did not. Instead he thundered, “My dear sir, Who is it that you can’t believe?” His listener realized in a moment he had been calling God a liar and repented and believed. I know Whom I have believed. Do you?

Message

One of the first verses I ever learned that gave me assurance as a believer that I was both saved and kept was verse 12 of 2 Tim. 1. Paul writes out of his own experience of suffering For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

Paul was in prison, he had been forsaken of many of his former friends and associates. Many were afraid to be known as a friend of Paul for fear of what the Government might do to them.

Yet in the midst of a situation that might have cause him to doubt God’s purpose or His love he joyously affirms, I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. Notice, Paul had been talking about what he believed, now he talks about who he is believing. When Jesus said, I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand, Paul said, AMEN! Can you say AMEN as well?

Message

As a Christian, did you know that you have a calling? Listen to these words in 2 Tim. 1:9, Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. I want to observe four things about that calling:

First, it is a “holy calling” – that is, it is a call to holy living. Every believer has that calling – it is inescapable. Second, it is a Gracious Calling. It is not according to our works. We did nothing to deserve it. It is given us in Christ. Thirdly, it is a Purposeful calling – according to His own purpose he called you. That simply implies that God has a great eternal purpose for your life (oh, don’t miss it), and finally, It is an eternal calling, given us before the world began. In Romans 11 Paul says of that calling that “the gifts and callings of God are without repentance”. That means He never changes His mind.

So let me ask, Are you living in the center of the circle of the calling of God? – if not you can be.

Message

The Epistle of 2nd Timothy lays out for us a challenging exhortation in these words, Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; 2 Tim.1:8

Paul is talking about our calling and he tells us that we are called to a pathway of suffering. Furthermore, we are called to suffer with others who are suffering. The present world-wide persecution of Christians certainly gives us lots of opportunity to obey that exhortation. Why do Christian then abandon and forsake those who are suffering?

It seems we would rather identify with the rich and famous, than the godly who are suffering. Shame on us. That’s the doctrine of the Prosperity Gospel, which is no gospel at all. The true believer has always been called upon to both suffer and to come along side those who are suffering. There are many of our brothers and sisters who need us right now.

Message

Last week I talked about the challenges facing our Christian Colleges. Let me quote briefly what I said;

The combined weapons of accreditation, broadened definitions of anti-discrimination law, and a clear anti-Christian bias are even now forcing colleges to bow to policies that are clearly contrary to Scripture. If they stand their ground they may loose their accreditation, if they conform, they will have lost their reason for existence.

Well it happened. Pepperdine Christian College, a Church of Christ school in California caved to the pressure last month and gave up its Title 9 exemption fully accepting the transgender policies of the Obama administration.

Attorney Brad Dacus of Pacific Justice Institute put it well. He said, “Pepperdine has in essence negated itself as a university committed to Christianity.” Paul said, Having done all to stand, let us stand. Pepperdine did not. Maybe it time to bring training back to the local church where it began.

Message

I started out last time by saying that each local church has a biblical mandate to teach all of its people, all the Word of God. Not only is that the way the church of the first century did its training, but it is the most practical way of training even today.

The local church is immediate to the life of its people. A man does not have to leave home and family or even his job and travel long distances, spending large sums of money in order to be trained to serve God.

Furthermore, as guardian of the life and doctrine of its people, the local church is best able to measure and observe not only the doctrinal fidelity and perception of those it is teaching, but also the degree of doctrinal application to their individual lives. Thus it can determine when the one being taught is ready to teach.

And finally, and perhaps most importantly for our present situation, the local church is the most stable and secure teaching agent possible. In any culture of persecution, public institutions of learning are immediately vulnerable to government intervention, as we are seeing already. The combined weapons of accreditation, broadened definitions of anti-discrimination law, and a clear anti-Christian bias are even now forcing colleges to bow to policies that are clearly contrary to Scripture. If they stand their ground they may loose —– if they conform, they will have lost their reason for existence.

The local, indigenous, New Testament church is always the last place that a godless, persecuting government can control or destroy. A well-taught New Testament church can survive long after its buildings are confiscated, or its congregation scattered. It is beyond any argument the soundest, wisest, and most stable unit for communicating Divine truth to the whole world ever devised. Thus with all our refinements, we have not and we cannot improve upon the New Testament philosophy.
