Message

We’ve been talking about our helplessness and God provision for us. Scripture makes clear that we cannot please God in our original fallen state. As Job so aptly put it, Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?

I am reminded of a children’s poem written years ago by Wendel Loveless that goes like this;

Marcie had a little pig and he was white as snow,
That is, when he’d had a bath, as you of course might know.
But Marcy had a terrible time to keep the piggy clean,
For he was just the dirtiest pig that one has ever seen.
She’d wash him and she’d scrub him till he would squirm and squeal,
As if he wanted her to know it was an unfair deal.
And then in the green backyard he’d play from morning until night,
Unless he’d happen to slip away and loose himself from sight.
And when she would find him he’d be dirtier than e’er before,
So Marcie’d get the soap again and scrub the pig some more.
Poor Marcie thought and wondered much what she could ever do,
And then she figured out a plan and this she carried through.
She took the piggy to a doctor who put the pig asleep,
And then he took his heart right out, but not of course to keep.
And they he took a little lamb, and took his heart our too.
And put it in the little pig, before the piggy knew.
When little piggy did awake, he had no more desire
To wallow in the mud again, nor ever in the mire.
But try as hard as e’er he could, he never understood,
How such a pig as once he was, could ever be so good.
And so you see dear children, we need a new heart too.
Just like the little piggy did, the old will never do.
If you’d receive a brand new heart, well here is how you may,
Accept God’s Son as Savior now, and let Him in today.

Message

Last time we were together we were talking about our helplessness – our helplessness to do good and to please God. We concluded that helplessness can be good, if it leads us to one who can save us. Peter’s experience with walking on water provides an excellent example. When he took his eyes off of Jesus and began thinking about the fierceness of the storm, he began to sink, and in one desperate moment of helplessness he cried, Lord, save me, and Jesus did.

God has always been about meeting us in our helplessness and saving us. For Adam’s nakedness He provided coats of skin. For Noah He provided an Ark. For Abraham on Mt. Moriah He provided a lamb caught in a thicket. And while each of these stories is historically true, taken together they are merely illustrations of the salvation God ultimately provided in Christ.

In Hebrews chapter 10 the Holy Spirit tell us, It was not possible for the blood of bulls and of goats to take away sin. Wherefore when Jesus came into the world He said, . . . a body you have prepared me for in burnt offering and sacrifices for sin you have had no pleasure. Then He said, Lo, I come to do your will Oh, God, and by that will was are eternally saved through the offering of the Body of Jesus Christ, once for all.

When we finally recognize the terror of our own helplessness, we are invited to come to the One who alone can save us and make it right. So God calls us in the final message on the last page of the Bible “Let everyone that is athirst come and take of the water of life freely.” That message is for you. Will you come?

Message

One of the most frightening experiences of life is finding ourselves in a situation where we feel completely helpless. And since we do not like that sensation, we do everything we can to avoid it. But what if it were true? If we really are helpless, then the wisest and safest thing we could do would be to recognize it and look for help.

Spiritual helplessness is the picture we get of ourselves as we read the Scriptures.
• Job says, “Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?” then he laments, “no one.”
• Jeremiah writes, “Can the Ethiopian change his skin of the leopard his spots? Then will I confess unto you that you can do good, who are accustomed to doing evil.”
• And David adds these words, “Every man at his best state is altogether vanity” (empty / vapor / nothing).
• The New testament picks up the theme with this; “There is none righteous, no not one, there is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God, They are all gone out of the way, They are together become unprofitable: there is none that doeth good , no not one.” Then there follows a whole litany of crimes that are daily committed by man from murder and mayhem to lies and deceit.

The point of all of this is that we might realize our helplessness to do right and run to the Savior who alone can forgive us, and give us a brand new heart that is capable of loving, obeying and following God. Knowing we are helpless is a good thing – it leads us to the one who can save us from sin and from ourselves.

Intro – Here is Bill Shade with today’s “Moment from God’s Word”.

Message

We Americans love our Freedom – but then, so do people all over the world. There is in each man the desire to be Free, and that is a divine impulse until it takes the form of being independent from God. When that happens, it is a freedom akin to a railroad train that took its freedom from the track – it is a freedom to experience disaster.

Israel’s first King tried to exercise that kind of freedom and had to be told by the Prophet Samuel, “To obey is better than sacrifice and to hearken than the fat of rams, for rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.” (1 Sam. 15:22, 23). This freedom from God’s control is what exiled Adam from the Garden in the first place. It is a freedom that has an awful cost and has produced tragic consequences.

What consequences?, every tear that has ever been shed, and every pain that has ever been felt and every sickness that has ever been experienced and every funeral that has ever been held and every war that has ever been fought and every sorrow / every murder / every crime / every lie / every divorce / every abortion / every anguish of the human soul through all the millenniums of human history is traceable to that one single act of independent rebellion against God. The ultimate catastrophe of Armageddon became a certainty the day Adam sinned.

And it is all of that Jesus bore away in His own blood at the cross and today He offers true freedom to all who will come to him. If you long for freedom from habits, freedom from sin and freedom from guilt, call upon Him today.

Message

I want you to think with me today – I want us to think about these words, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him, male and female created He them. (Genesis 1:27)

Now the Bible makes clear that when Adam sinned and rebelled, the image of God within him was marred, but there is plenty of evidence that man in a flawed and distorted way, still reflects aspects of that image.

One of the more obvious ways that is apparent is in man’s own insatiable drive to create. God is a Creator, and man seems to have a built in drive to do the same. And that is not surprising, because we were created to reflect His glory. So we create – and every building or bridge or structure that has ever been built, and every machine that has ever been invented, and every painting that has ever been painted and every symphony that has ever been composed, and every book that has ever been written – All the architecture and all the technology and all the achievements are a reflection of God’s own creativity.

Animals don’t create – they assemble whatever it is that they have been programmed to assemble, but man imagines, he dreams and he produces just like his Creator. And man will live forever as well – in heaven with his Creator or in hell – separated forever. So the next time you marvel at man’s creativity, just think about that.

Message

Last week we talked about the veracity of the Word of God – Jesus’ great statement, Thy Word is Truth. Well, it in not only truth but it is living and powerful and, sharper than any two edged sword as well.

I was recently in the country of Ethiopia. There is a large and vibrate evangelical movement there and I have wondered how it had come about. I learned they also had a Reformation. They told me:

“Twenty five years ago God began to move among the young people in the Orthodox Churches. He said, there was a hunger for God among us that we could neither deny nor explain. We tried everything the Church offered us – the rituals, and prayers, but could not find peace.

Then we decided to study the Scriptures for ourselves. Almost at once, some of our group learned the precious truth of knowing your sins are forgiven because of Jesus death for us. Those who found it shared it and more came to faith in Christ. Finally, as we began to preach the Scriptures openly wherever we could,

The Church Hierarchy called a meeting and examined us. They told us we would have to give up this idea of being born again – of being saved. We told them we could not deny the Lord or His Word so they excommunicated us.

So hundreds of us joined together and called ourselves the Emmanuel Evangelical Churches of Ethiopia. We named it Emmanuel, because God is with us.” What a testimony to the power of the Word of God.

In a culture of Fantasy, it is comforting to remember that declaration of Jesus Christ found in His High Priestly prayer to the Father in John 17. He said, Sanctify them through Thy Truth, Thy Word is Truth.

Think about that, Thy Word is Truth. It doesn’t just contain some truth, it embodies Truth. It is Truth.

You want to know about Origins? Thy Word is Truth! Want to know about the future? Thy Word is Truth. Want to be sure about eternity, about heaven, about forgiveness, about anything your heart desires to know? Same Answer: Thy Word is Truth.

Message

My father was not a particularly religious man. Oh, he had been brought up in church and had gone through all the rituals that church could offer him. But like most young men his age, he was enamored more with just making a living than knowing God.

At my mother’s prodding, he attended a special set of meetings at mother’s church. An old evangelist was preaching and he took his text from Mark’s Gospel chapter eight. It reads like this; For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul.

My father later told me that he didn’t hear much after that. Those verses echoed in his mind and heart until he cried out to God, “Lord, I am lost and on my way to hell. Please save me.” Well, God answered that prayer.

After that, Dad lived a life of dedication to God and service to His cause. Perhaps we need to ask ourselves that same question; what will it profit you if you gain the whole world and lose your own soul? Or what shall are you going to give in exchange for your soul?

Friday of this week is the Annual March for Life that will again fill the streets of our Capitol with thousands of people passionate about preserving the ethic of Life in this culture that is so fond of death. We ought to applaud them and support them, and join them if we can, even though the liberal media will try its best to ignore them.

Abortion is a crime that has become so pervasive, we can’t even get our minds around it.

In 1980 I was speaking to a high school assembly in Philadelphia on the last day of a World Series that the Phillies won against Kansas City. I was supposed to be speaking about Abortion, but as the kids filed in, I knew where their minds were not on what I wanted to talk about.

It just happened I also knew a couple significant statistics, so I asked them to imagine they were looking down on Veteran’s Stadium and to tell me what they saw. One boy immediate called out 59,000 people waiting for the Phillies to win the series – to which everyone shouted and applauded.

I agreed, them I asked them to imagine a terrible tragedy that would wipe out every person seated in those stands. And when they got suddenly very quiet I added, “because that is the number of babies we aborted last year in this state alone.” Something to think about on this anniversary.

Message

American Physical Society has published the following warning:
“The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring. If no mitigating actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth’s physical and ecological systems, social systems, security and human health are likely to occur. We must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beginning now.”

One of the rather comical aspects of this paranoia is that Global warming actually stopped in the 1990s and for the last 17 years there has been no measurable warming of the planet. Actually, some climatologists are now predicting a Global winter.

The really pathetic part of this is the arrogance we demonstrate in believing we can actually control, or even influence the weather. Did you know that of the 100% of C02 emissions in the atmosphere, human activity is responsible for .28% of them. Pretty paltry stuff – but we enjoy believing we are in control.

God had to remind Job of the same thing. In chapter 37 (reading from the GNB)
“God commands snow to fall on the earth, and sends torrents of drenching rain. The breath of God freezes the waters, and turns them to solid ice. Lightning flashes from the clouds, they move at God’s will. They do all that God commands, everywhere throughout the world.
God sends rain to water the earth; or he may send it to punish us, or to show us his favor. Pause a moment, Job; consider the wonderful things God does.” Amen? (Job 37:6 – 14)
